Started this competition with pure interest.
Competition Outline
The competition is designed to challenge and seek the creation of a modular house with ideas and concepts in architectural design. The aim of this competition is to promote our ideas for space utilization, as well as focusing on awakening the perception of the building process, while simultaneously raising awareness of the sustainability.
Key Brief:
- There is not any specific site location for this competition, as it mainly collects ideas and concepts and aims to create an exemplary prototype for all the new future houses to follow.
- Entrants are challenged to conceive a new and original concept for modular house, however not strictly limited to the style of ‘pre-fabricated structure’.
- The design philosophy should be affordable, practical, convenient, efficient and easy to construct. The house plan should NOT be in relatively large scale.
- Encourage the creation of new living style which is not only limited for houses, but also can be like pavilions, structures, or landscape.
- The main philosophy of your submitted work is defined as “modular technology”.

My Approach
The key for modular housing is the simplicity and flexibility.
Simplicity = Understand the basic needs on the living
Flexibility = Understand how people's needs will change in time
For an example, let's compare the needs for an early 20's person's and the Early 30's person
20's
- Student Life
- Low Income / Family Allowance
- Single / Relationship
- No Chirldren
- Low Needs , More Party
- Less space, Just a bed for Hangover
- Studio Apartment / Student Accomodation
30's
- Professional Life
- Average Salary Income / Independent Income
- Married / Serious Relationship
- Possible Chirldren / Chirldrens
- High Needs, Less Party
- More space, Office Room and Spare Room...wishing to have more spaces...
- Rental Property / Possible First Owned House
For some you can really relate to this, or I have even missed something.
We cannot avoid growing and with time our basic needs will change over time.
"So why not design something that is simple and flexible enough that house will evolve while we individual grow?"
Rough Idea
- -3 x 3 x 3 Square Pre-Fabricated Structural Steel System
- -1.5 x 3 x 3 Rectangle Pre-Fabricated Structural Steel System
- -Structural Grid System with 1.5m Spacing
- -Slot and Push Syste
- Add module with increasing needs of function
Well that's where my brain is at.
I will be refining this idea to look for further possibilities and opportunity
