Human Ergonomics : Standing

Lets get to the basic...

When designing for majority of things, we design for human beings... or even for pets/animals... but let's focus "us" today.

Scale is a big factor in our profession. At work and no matter how experience we are, we always have our tape measure right next to us.

When we design, we are designing something that is going to be built in future. Means we can only visual what the end looks like. However by understanding the scale of the building, space and objects we can start to make decesion based on educated prediction.

  • Is it going to be too high or too low?

  • Is it too narrow or too wide?

  • Is it too short or too long?

  • Is it enough space or not enough space?

  • Is it too small or too big?

  • Is it comfortable or uncomfortable?

These are all based on NUMBERS and FEELINGS. We cannot remember all of them... but we can always come back to "me" and simply grab the tape measure and start make logical decision making.

and is it just me? My university have never thought me this.... LOL

So I did my own research and based on my experience I have study the human measurements (Ergonomics).

Male

Female

Use this as a base and a guide. I'm sure there is more to it and we can really get in to specific details and I do recommend you to. However let's just start here and master this basic.

I will dig more in to ergonomics in the future blog. Next topic will be "Sitting".
